#30: #Soildiers and Scouts

Soldiers and Scouts

Couple of months ago I was  interacting with few kids at my apartment , when they  came home after giving their exams, I asked them how was their exams? One told Uncle , not so good we got lot of stuff out of syllabus, which was not thought in school, why can’t they just give what is in syllabus?

Other student on the other hand said, I also got things out of Syllabus, but I referred reference books which I got , I explored other books, so I could answer the questions. So, my paper was good.

If you analyse two approaches, one person wants exactly what is thought, haven’t explored anything extra, and doesn’t want also, while another one was exploring things outside his boundaries, he was not confined to what is offered to him, and he doesn’t mind exploring other stuff.

Phycologists term these as two distinct Mindsets

-        Solider Vs Scout Mindset OR also known as

-        Fixed Vs Growth Mindset

As we know Soldiers do ONLY what they are told to do (Fixed items) as oppose to Scouts who are curious and wants to explore more.

So, what is Mindset? Mindset is the metaphor how all of us process information & ideas in our daily lives. And based on our mindsets   we unconsciously behave similarly to that Mindset behaviour while making decisions, choosing options, interactions, etc.

Most of us watch cricket correct? As we are born cricket fans!!! Imagine India /Pak game, and decision Umpire made against India, we all take all our energies in finding the reason why it is wrong decision and introspect the decision to death, and will only get convinced by 3rd Umpire; while if same happens against Pak, we happily accept and celebrate … no one even bothers to see whether Umpire made correct decision or not.

We all are driven by Motivated Reasoning, wherein we are unconsciously motivated by our desires, fears, social inclinations. We make decisions, choices, interpretations of the things based on same and we spend our energies defending same.

Our judgement is strongly influenced unconsciously to side which we want the team to win and this is the scary part of “soldier Mindset, where we make decisions /choices unconsciously “And this is ubiquitous.

Scout Mindset are without prejudices, biases, because they are curious, they need to know reasons for what all is happening around and why, they are eager to learn things.

They can happily adapt to new situations, they can accept failures, or fault made by them and admit is happily or even change the way of thinking or sides if explained logically and if they are convinced.

We all have our views for Death penalty, Gay marriages, you may agree or disagree, but person with scout / Growth mindset will listen to all views and will consider changing his/her mind if convinced. So basically, he is not fixed.

You all would be using browsers daily; can you tell how many are using Internet explorer? and How many of you are using Google chrome? People using IE choose to use default option been offered to them Vs other who took pain to download new browser, they doubted default Option and explore new thing.

Fixed Mindset people resist change and growth Mindset people are ready for change, they always keep evolving and willing to change, learn and grow and that is the need of the hour, our country.

To evolve to Growth Mindset, we need to “Train the Brian “and with practice you will be able to move from Fixed to Growth Mindset. You need open to adapt.

So, what do we want to most yearn for (Strong desire)? Whether to defend our won beliefs or to yearn to see the world as clearly as possible with Open eyes and mind and bias.
