33% - Thirty Three Percent
'We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what
we give " Said Winston Churchill.
It was a gloomy day, besides the roaring ocean waves along the beach,
there was a large army anxiously waiting to cross the Ocean. Rama,
Lakshman and their Monkey army were distressed, waiting to cross the Ocean to
reach Lanka. All of them came to know that Sita is in Lanka, and
they were struggling to find an appropriate person who could cross the same.
Agand, the crown prince, said he is still small, to go, Jambvant was old,
others also were expressing the disability to cross the Ocean. Hanuman sat
quietly and listened to all this, not sure of his capabilities, whether he
could do or not. Then Jambavant the old and wise bear approached
him and reminded him about his abilities and capabilities as What he can do.
Realizing the same Hanuman got the confidence, and he crossed the Ocean. Awareness is the first
step toward transformation.
We all have that inner potential, ability and capability, we just need
Mentor like Jambvant who discover, recognize and perceive the true potential of
within us.
Coaching and Mentorship have been used interchangeably, but there is a
significant difference. Mentoring taps a basic instinct most people share
– the desire to pass on their learning, to help other people develop and
fulfil their potential.
Coaching is for some specific goal-oriented tasks, and if the job is
finished, the relationship ends.
As a protégé (Mentee ), I was able to witness great mentors in my life, which
helped me understand the whole gamut of leadership. They were a sounding
board for me an excellent listener.
In this current era
uncertainty, Agility is the key, same applies to our business, but if as a leader,
you get anxious every day, it very challenging to operate. Fear of
losing is our main concern. To handle these situations, Intelligently
and effectively, my Mentor guided me towards Emotional
intelligence, which became such an essential tool for me to handle
situations. As an Emotionally intelligent person, I was able to empathize, ready
to listen and most importantly, I became conscious, Aware of what I am doing
and what others are doing and understanding the WHY.
So what we should do as a Mentor or as protégé. There is Mentor Rule, Law of
33% You should divide life into three parts :
o Spend 33% of your
time around people lower / Junior to you ( in experience, role or
function ), where you can mentor them,
o 33% of the time/people you spend
with become your peer, they become your friends.
o But last 33% of what most
people/time forget about, these are people who are 10,20 years ahead of you,
They will make you uncomfortable, that's what you want, these can be
your mentors.
o People
struggle to find how to spend 33% of the time with people who have more wisdom
than you.
o 10%
of the time you can invest in Events, Contests , Coronations, meetings
like Toastmasters, Rotary Clubs where you learn from others
o 10%
of the time you can Spend reading books where you will be with people which you
wanted to be, but now they are no more or unreachable. Bust their wisdom stored
in their autobiographies/books.
o Last
13% you can be with people, seniors, 10-20 years ahead of you, where being with
them you get their wisdom.
Mentoring is an essential part if we want to excel and fast track our development and growth You need to have a Mentor and SyncUP with them as often as you can !!! As said, "when a student is ready teacher emerges, I modified it as a mentee is ready Mentor emerges. " Have you met your Mentor recently? Have You ??

Thanks for comments . But as Lao Tzu quoted in Tao Te Ching: 'When the student is ready the teacher will appear. When the student is truly ready The teacher will Disappear. So keep finding in the area where you see yourself , you will get tingling that he is the person . Same applies with mentor , sometime you may have to experiment and try .
